Step Inside A Secret Garden

Let its secluded location, protected walls and fragrant plants whisk you away

A magical garden awaits you. It longs to be tucked into a quiet corner of your backyard, placed there just for the pure enjoyment of it. The appeal of a secret garden is vast-it offers a private, secluded nook for relaxing, breathing in fragrant floral scents and retreating from the hustle and bustle of the outside world. With a little planted artistry, this special garden can become the best-kept secret around.

Shrouded in Privacy
Walled courtyards and tiny urban terraces tucked behind apartment buildings are ready-made secret gardens, naturally shielded from passersby on the street. In a larger garden, the secluded nature of the backyard makes it a perfect spot for hiding a secret garden.

To create a treasured sense of privacy, install "walls" with a combination of planted materials and hardscaping. Consider large hemlocks for an instant dense hedge, a row of boxwood shrubs or columnar evergreen bushes like Hicks yews. Pair living walls with a structure such as a fence, trellis, the side of an existing shed or an old stone wall.

Enhance the private feeling of your enclave by adding a "ceiling" to your secret garden, with a vine-draped pergola or arbor. You could even add a real door or a gate to further obscure the room within; pieces of architectural salvage, such as a weathered wood door or a wrought iron gate reclaimed from an older home, will lend an element of intrigue and history.

Lushly Landscaped
A bare wooden fence and an empty trellis will beg to be planted with a climber that weaves in and out of small crevices and holes, clambering up towards the sky. Morning glories, climbing roses, clematis, wisteria and ivy all make good choices for growing on supports.

If your secret garden is a back corner of your property, the soil may not be the best your yard has to offer. Or you may not have any soil at all if the space is very small or the available ground is paved over with the brick walkway. In these cases, containers present a marvellous solution. They can be filled with colourful annuals, fragrant herbs and even vegetables. Best of all, they can be moved around to camouflage bare spots along a trellis or an opening in a hedge.

Special Features
To make your secret garden even more of a destination, add an enchanting water feature. If you wish to keep the area especially restful, choose a reflecting pool with still waters, or even a small birdbath. Alternately, the splish-splash noises of trickling fountain or small waterfall would mask the sounds of quiet conversation and keep your garden a secret place where quiet tete-a-tetes between old friends are overheard by not a single soul.

Sweet Scents
Fragrant plants add a distinctive magic to the secret garden, creating a special space that' markedly different from the rest of your yard. Fragrance also encourages visitors to stop and linger, inhaling the sweet scent of roses, peonies, lavender, jasmine, honeysuckle or gardenia for example. If you have empty spaces between pavers, don't want to maintain a traditional lawn area, plant a carpet of fragrant herbs like thyme or chamomile.

Wish List of Mine ;)))

Dated 5th September 2006 - Evacuated and edited from Come What May

If been asked, sepa2 pun mesti suma ada impian. If not, there'll be no aspiration and inspiration. The world will be such a nasty to go through and boring to live into. When I was in my high school years, my wish is to enter uni. Now, I grew older...awet muda ba ;p...there seems to be loads of stuff to achieve:

1. take SCUBA license
2. write a GREAT book
3. set up a business I would pass to generations
4. take driving licence
5. take a master degree in English literature and classical art

klu ada SCUBA licence mesti best, manala tau jpa harta karun d banggi....ada 1 spot 2 sa npk sangatla cantik wpun nampak dari jauh...mesti coral reef dia bt sa lupa dunia....i just cant resist waterrrrr.....eh, i can swim apa...i pity who can't....LOL....rugi! & psl tulis buku 2 pla, it won't be a romance story but sa mo tulis 'bout the story of my very own tribe...the Tagahas...at least len kali, 1000 tahun akan datang ble buat reference, and first & foremost as proofs that Tagahas bukan bangsa kampungan or malas or ketinggalan zaman...but we're just a bunch of ppl who appreciate the soil to benefits of those lupa daratan, the real "inda sedar diri" kinda ppl...yg sangatla x sedar there's more 2 life than just posh cars, skyhigh apartment, clubbing....high heels...gucci, christian dior,bla..bla...cuba klu org tanam padi juz to feed the family but not 4 commercial....adala yg btl2 jadi org putih x makan nasi but ubi gantang....ja...than rice ni is luxury food....padan muka derang....abis x sedar diri, sepala yg mo supply derang rice klu bukan these humble farmers...siurang x pa, siurang suda besa tanam padi...

pikir2 bila sd zaman menganggur lagi luas dr ladang anggur ni, better set up a business & expand it to be my generations heritage...ini bukan zaman where ppl were judged by their books but looks...the thicker acc u have the greatest u r although sijil kindergarten ja...money rules....sa ble bayangkan that if in a sudden tiba2 i strike a gold mine mesti cigu2...lecturers/professors...even menteri2 & kings & queens pun will bow down 2 me....HAHAHAHA!!!! even if sa dulu masa uni x pemes, antar ass pun berexcuses lg (abis sa mmg x tau buat????...camana....bg sa tempoh 1 tahun pun sa mmg takkan dpt A+...cuz i really dont hv heart in it....bt pa paksa2....)...mesti suma pun mengaku knew me....I CAN IMAGINE....LOL..kidding....sssss....;p

sa mmg x pandai drive car...start enjin ja pandai this..LOL...so utk wish yg mmg sa ble tunaikan d sooner....i put this one...pas 2 klu suda ada license & can drive already...& got lots of money...i wanna...4WD vehicle....so that i can travel anywhere i want...basar ba sabah ni...besides, i lurrrrveeee.....travelling!!!!!

& the fifth wish...it must comes true this one...cuz i know this is my passion...my talent...my 1st love....my strength....my body & soul....MY EVERYTHING.....!!!!

BUT HOW I WISH....the most of all, that God will always granted me normal physical abilities like now so that I can use it to earn money....& as long as I'm free of any acute sickness...and as long as im always showered with blessings to fill up my bank acc...makes my parents happy...the food always laid up on the table...theres my pc...my streamyx...my hp...my bedroom as it is now...& as long as the family dogs are always the 1st to greet us...and that i can still attend church every sabbath...as long as LOVE & HAPPINESS lingered around us...and that i have my bonnie....by my side....and as long as i can help others & do things that make me feel good, i am happy...grateful...satisfied...honoured...thankful, as can be....AMEN.

An Evening of The Unsung Reunion

Dated 6th July 2006 - Evacuated and edited from Come What May

RRR...E..U..N..I..O..N.....happened 2day, quite spontaneous...Teddy called Chang, Kartini, Marthonoh & Sonnel, Chang called ME, Elna, Ma Nyuk, Ah Siong....initially i didn't wanna go cuz i've got some tasks but then eventually i said yes! several of us were married/engaged but we came minus the husbands/wives/fiance/es. marthonoh brought this old letter which the rest of us had totally forgot... A letter or should I called it a petition exactly... About us wanting a physics/add maths teachers...

The story went like this: we were just starting our form 4 in science stream session but without physics/maths teachers...& we even heard that if the problem went longer, we have 2 quit science stream & went for art stream or leave 4 another school... There were only 2 choices... and we x want either choice... First, becuz all of us was dreaming 2 b engineers/architects/scientists..;p..any of the science stream jobs... We were really zealous but naive during those days... Second, becuz most of us were spoiled-crybabies-spoonfed-rotten kids who x wanna stay at hostel if we transferred 2 another school...So we agreed 2 make a PETITION, contained a cover letter & signatures with remarks of why we NEED the teachers 4 d subjects...

Reading the copy of the PETITION was hilarious!!! ;LOL;LOL;LOL!!! Now I remember that after the petition was made, all of us of the 4 SCIENCE 1995 headed 2 the principal's office...Mr Kah Kong Boo..

I'm x sure if our action did prove something either was it related to the rescue of the 2 teachers who came like 6-months (or was it less) after our petition...

This reunion...which is: 11 years after proved that although we've left high school/college/university...we still look the same...except that most have gain weight but only a pinch of chubbiness... Although few are already married & had kid(s) or is engaged 2 be married...looks like those yesteryears of our high schools giggles+fun was just last nite...& for me we still look the same...same old us...LOL... How i miss the memories of high school... Guys, are we going 2 be reunited again?

People of Balabak
~The majority of ppl here in the surrounding of SK Padang is the group of Balabak ethnic(LOL! klu dusun len suda 2 d pikiran)
~Beware the practise of "charm", it's still HOT & DA BOMB here, so be suspicious 2 everyone but not until it's SO...obvious & it shows... Never consume any food/edible thing they gave: first becuz someone might dislikes u and put something in it which cause bounty of pain, second becuz u should be wary of the hygiene level

Villages nearby
~Apart from Maliyu, others are: Padang, Kalangkaman, Damaran, Pengkalan darat (Pengkalan = Pangkalan = Port; There is no such thing as port after all, they are even clueless of the origin of the name)

History of the school
~Before being moved to Maliyu, SK Padang was formerly situated at Kg Padang but due to certain disputes and natural causes it was relocated to current spot in Maliyu

Water problem
~Don't expect direct pipe supply, of course even if u can see a pipeline, the source is from the tank & from rain
~Be prepared that you might take your bathe at the well

Temperature
~It is really damn hot & dry... Mostly lack of wind, imagine that
~Although it is windy & cloudy, DO still wear sunblock with at least SPF40...unless you think tan is sexy

Food source
~It's a fisherman village u say, alas!... Seafood isn't abundant here as it is used to be as before. But you can still savour a simple luxury though, you can still have fish for meals but have to "order" 'em. And it is more than plenty cuz they'll sell you 4 fishes for RM1. Errrr..but they are just ikan putih, ikan kayu... What do you expect? Tuna? Salmon?

Hayao Miyazaki

Dated ..... - Evacuated and edited from Come What May

I'm a fan of Hayao Miyazaki since I first bought Spirited Away. I'm taken away by his marvellous animation & stories since that. I paint my fantasies in dreams but Hayao paint them in films. I have keep most of his great animation so it came to me eventually that there are similarities & continuity in each of his story. But what i found most is that he prone to girl character, between the age of 10-12. I wonder if any of this coincidence do related to his personal life. Perhaps they represent of his first love memories during childhood. Or the daughters he never had. Even in most of the girls' faces are all looks the same to me.

These are the similarities occurs:
-opening theme of nausicaa & laputa
-faces of the girls (nausicaa vs laputa vs totoro vs kiki)
-faces of the boys (nausicaa vs laputa vs my neighbour totoro)
-faces of the old women (my neighbour totoro vs spirited away vs nausicaa)
-the creature cat-squirrel (laputa vs nausicaa)
-the in-the-cloud scenes (nausicaa vs laputa)
-the fat cat (the cat returns vs )

Why do I like his artworks? It's becuz we share the same interests:
His passion of the English lifestyle/fashion/architecture/culture
Prairie landscape, w flowers everywhere
Water landmarks: Stream, brook, fountain (I luvvvvv....waterrrrr!)
Secret garden feature (& he did it beautifully...amazing..!)
Nature especially the forest & countryside views
He's an animal lover, he nv 4get to feature 1 in any of his film

Banggi Island

Dated 11th July 2006 - Evacuated and edited from Come What May

10th July 2006: my 1st time in banggi...first timer riding a home-made boat...first time 2 cross the ocean...but, wallaaaa...happy 2 announce that i'm free from that deadly (LOL) seasickness ;))) suda melapor diri d sk padang banggi, huuuuuuu...a bit of regret lingered around me but have 2 b brave cuz i'm after the money after all... LOL... ROOOOAAARRRRR!!!...i'm really alergic 2 money, u know...LOL!!! but i do pay tithe ba...

lemme tell u bit bout the journey...i took off from bandau (i prefer bandau 4 km) around 8.00 o'clock am & reached kudat by 9.10 am...where i met winnie, my colleague 2 sk padang, & whom told me a little nightmare...supposed there's a ferry at 9 but the ferry was out of service, so we've 2 board a home-made boat! 2 cut a long story short, we embarked 2 banggi @ 1.00 o'clock sharp..hmmm...punctuality! pas 2 masa dlm kapal met guys (tah...seem they are gaining profit fr projects in banggi) yg melalut pasal pugai balabak(!)... terngiang d pikiran, advices fr a sweet online acquaintance about not to wear make-up & just wear the beautiful rag i have...heard the story but listening isn't believing, & i know & always aware that God is by my side...& at this moment realised that sk padang isn't as easy as we've heard..that the distance fr karakit 2 padang isn't 30 minutes or shorter but can exceed 2 1 hour...so dalam 3 jam setengah dalam kapal 2 sa mula imagine bout the school we'll be teaching..on my mind, the school is near the sea (bulila jalan2 p beach kunu! then tpikir pla, silap2 nti kena kacau, nda jadi berangan indah...), that the school has a neat & gracefully designed miniature garden with a trimmed field...tapi angan2ku dispoilkan oleh "sakitnya pantat duduk dlm kapal 3 jam setengah 2!" crammed dr pinggang spi feet bah..mo berengsot pun susa..punyala crowded 2 kapal, maybe ada more than 40 ppl la dlm 2 kapal including children... the weather petang 2 is beautiful so ndala teruk kapal melambung..kira smooth jala... but bloody hell!!! punyala slow 2 kapal moving...i was sitting facing the bengkoka peninsula, npk cam 1 spot of the scenery = ja dlm an hour... i think kalau sa terjun & went for a swim (of course i like swimming), sempat lagi kejar 2 kapal balik...hehehe..i even think, kalu sa swim duluan lg sa spi d banggi...LOL...lain kali bawa sendirila kusyen ni pengalas pantat klu naik kapal la... klu ginila,hiiiii...sanggup sa naik feri although ferry is expensive than naik kapal...ooh ya! remember tu Malay bcrita = ni kawan dia psl TORNADO DI KUDAT tu (pics enclosed in My Photos section), sa dengar nda dengar ja time derang bcerita sb bikin gogor ginawo ja mo dgr 2 suma, sudala sedang low esteem mo sampai Banggi. Bila sa suda nampak tu pics tornado baru tpikir kedahsyatannya..bayangkan kalu dia moved like American tornado tu, habis kena sapu pekan Kudat+Banggi... duiiiii...yoooo....palis2!!! But is it really a tornado?! or juz some rare phenomenon? anybody out there can explain?

finally, we reached banggi almost 4:30 pm..2 pun b4 banggi limpas 1 pulau tah-tia-tau yg igtkan banggi suda mula2, sebab muka sa mcm monster da kali 2 nda sabar2 lg spi sebab sa mcm mo terberak suda, crammed kaki suda...skali spi d jeti, sa heranla napa jeti dia tinggi sangat... rupanya laut sedang surut, skali even closer 2 d jetty the more sakit jiwa me mo turun dr kapal...& rasa saat 2la kapal 2 move the slowest! bila kapal da spi jeti & igtkan adala org kasi turun tangga supaya senang kami naik p jeti..rupanya have 2 climb the jetty yg walaupun tinggi dia takat climb guas biabas...tapi sa pakai baju kurung bah... 2la bsemangat tul p melapor diri ni..isshhh, manala sa tau, sepa suruh talampau optimistic... geography is already past thing ba, bah x islander who cares to mind the nature's clock of pasang surut bo.. so waited till almost evry1 was up onto the jetty b4 my turn - hantam ja masa 2, paduli derang terpukau nampak kakiku yg putih melepak this, paduli nampak santut - theres no turning back of not to climb this one, have 2 climb the obstacle... since ada semangat climb yg tiba2 teruja ni, ringan ja ba badan sa climb, few seconds ja suda spi atas jeti, nah....kannnnn...who says im fat! if im really were, i wouldnt have reach the jetty...LOL.. my sisters keep teasing me getting chubby when in fact my guy friends are admiring it, that's a COMPLIMENT!hahaaaa....;)))

so, we continue w the journey, we are not in sk padang yet, we've arrived @karakit aka banggi town.. so we need 2 find a transport 2 sk padang, after paying RM5 for the kapal, winnie asked the local there which led us 2 a man known as "haji" who conducts transportation business 2 maliyu with his toyota hilux..as ladies we've given privilege to sit inside the "inner chamber" ;p while waiting 4 the vehicle to take off, i managed 2 take glimpses of the surrounding..theres a hospital uphill, police station, mosque, a row of restaurants, a small resort: i can see they built a house on top of a tree (err.., is it an "asam jawa" tree?), phone booth, bus stop..2 rows of groceries...

this is after the boat ride story.. which is the 2nd phase of my travel. on d way 2 sk padang, u passed smk banggi, sk batu layar & sk limbuak darat, is it all or did i miss any? i forgot. it took another hour 2 reach sk padang, now we knew that, sk padang is actually situated in a village called maliyu & that padang is the name of another village somewhere around maliyu. and that the village is indeed at the seaside, i can hear the rustling of the waves. upon arriving i was really exhausted, i could nearly fainted even for a smile, i lost mood 2 talk, all i wanna do was 2 lie down..but alas! since nobody there knew bout our arrival so theres x proper place such as a place called house...all we found was a store..hehehe...adakah ruma guru derang kasi jadi stor tayar..so that nite, we slept @ one of the teacher's house..

Why did Borneo's elephant shrink? Nobody knows. Even there is no local word for elephant in any of the tribes in Borneo. Meaning, those elephants are not a Borneo origin. But here in Sukau they rule. See 'em, you are a real one lucky guy. See a wild orang utan, you'll jump like a kid. Watch Proboscis monkeys and it is who is watching who, lol! Beware of the crocodiles, though and you are not supposed to kill 'em cause they are relatives of the Sungai tribe. No kidding! Ask them when you get there. And oh, say my hi to the leeches. Lol!

My Fave Poem

The Difference

I got up early one morning
And rushed right into the day;
I had so much to accomplish
I didn't take time to pray.

Problems just tumbled about me
And heavier grew each task;
Why doesn't God help me, I wondered.
He answered, "You didn't ask."

I wanted to see joy and beauty,
But the day toiled on, gray and bleak;
I wondered why God didn't show me
- He said, "But you didn't seek."

I tried to come into God's presence;
I used all my keys at the lock;
God gently and lovingly chided,
"My child, you didn't knock."

I woke up early this morning
And paused before entering the day;
I had so much to accomplish
That I had to take time to pray.

A Tribute For My Ancestry

My maternal great grandparents

Wonder how many heirloom did it take to get this photo taken back then? Staring at this newfound bit of treasure got me into puzzles of mind. How old are they when this moment was frozen? I can see that my great grandmother (I would prefer to refer her by "Tidi"; in Dusun dialect means mother) is even not into her full puberty yet cause her small breast is obvious, and she's already married? Was she getting her period already when she surrendered herself to a matrimony? Oh, and that is how a Tagahas costume should look like. I remember now how Taki describe it - long sleeve and knee length sarong. It is indeed different from Kadazan costume we imitate these days. Yeah, this is the real costume of Tagahas. But I just cannot deny that I do resemble from my Tidi's look - those round sharp eyes and pointed mouth. She is also once a priestess who live long enough to see her great grandchildren including me. Yea...it is coming back to my memory now, no wonder she used to stare at me without a wink, I really resemble like her, she must be very proud. If only I was older at those time so I can ask her to teach me to do charms. You cannot say I am superstitous but hey..these days there are so many beast masked as a human, only magic should banish them. She was a priestess. And is that why she got to learn black magic, because of her facial feature?
